SOUTHFIELD MI

Southfield MI is located in the southeastern part of the state, and offers a diverse environment for an equally diverse population. The city itself has a population of over 72,000 people. However, its location as part of the upscale office area of the metropolitan area of Detroit puts the Southfield Township right in the middle of the most active corridor of commerce and tourism in the area.

ECONOMY

Southfield is noted for the Golden Triangle – a group of 5 golden skyscrapers that provide well over 2 million square feet of office space to this busy financial and commercial district. There is also a luxurious high-rise apartment building in the complex, providing lodging for the many businessmen. Other office space adds another 22 million square feet of office space for this busy area, drawing in companies such as Federal-Mogul, R.L. Polk & Co., Guardian Alarm, and International Automotive Components, among others. There are over one hundred Fortune 500 companies based in Southfield. There are also diplomatic missions in this city.

COLLEGES AND HOSPITALS

Southfield also is home to Oakland Community College, The Specs Howard School of Media Arts, and Lawrence Technological University. The Providence Medical Center also offers residence training in a wide selection of medical fields. The public school system is nationally recognized, as well.

HISTORY

The area on which Southfield was built was surveyed in 1817, making it one of the older settlements. However, it has continued to grow into a cosmopolitan city, serving very much as a suburban outpost for movers and shakers in Detroit. Southfield continues to represent the wide variety of architectural style seen throughout Detroit, with Art Deco, Neogothic, and Renaissance styles coexisting in the same business district.  The Southfield Town Center itself is of Contemporary Modern styling, and features the “city within a city” interconnections between skyscrapers. The city shares many of the landmarks and monuments usually credited to Detroit itself, with access to the famous Campus Martius, Cadillac Square, Grand Circus, and the legendary theaters in the larger, more well-known Detroit. Southfield’s motto is “The Center of it All!” and that certainly is true for this culturally diverse, cosmopolitan city.

CHARITABLE ORGANIZATIONS

With its diverse population and cosmopolitan outlook, the people of Southfield have a strong commitment to helping the less fortunate.  There are many charitable organizations in Southfield, including the Salvation Army and Habitat for Humanity, which builds houses for the needy. The Southfield Firefighters Charities are very active, helping the University of Michigan Burn Center, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, and many other charities.
