Phoenix AZ is the 6th largest city in the United States, and the capital of Arizona. While it may be 6th in size to other cities, it is the most heavily populated state capital in the country, with 1/5 million residents. The Phoenix metro area itself, called the Valley of the Sun, has a population of over 4 million, making it the 12 largest in the country.

Phoenix has been a major player in the political scene for decades, first making its impact on American politics with Barry Goldwater and William Rehnquist. John McCain and Sandra Day O’Conner also hail from the city. But, politics are not the only contribution Phoenix makes to the country.

There is a great history of performing arts in Phoenix and the surrounding area. The Phoenix Symphony Hall hosts the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra, the Phoenix Youth Symphony, Ballet Arizona, and the Arizona Opera. Another popular venue is the Orpheum Theatre, home of the Phoenix Metropolitan Opera. Phoenix facilities also host music tours, some of which utilize downtown theaters such as the Herberger Theater Center, with its 3 stages. Actors Theatre of Phoenix and the Arizona Theatre Company also thrive in the downtown area. There are many other entertainment venues in the city, and several of them support independent theatre companies and musical organizations.

When it comes to music, Phoenix may hold the record for the production of popular singers. The country music scene would be barren without Phoenix, and rock would not be the same. Duane Eddy, Buck Owens, Wayne Newton, and Marty Robbins hail from there, and Meat Puppets, Jimmy Eat World, Mr. Mister, and Gin Blossoms do as well. Even more musical artists have moved into the city. There are also sit coms such as The New Dick Van Dyke Show, Alice, and The Brothers Brannagan that were filmed in Phoenix, and The Medium is currently filmed there.

All 4 of the major sports leagues have teams in the city. The Arizona Cardinals, Arizona Rattlers, Phoenix Coyoties, and Arizona Diamondbacks all are headquartered in Phoenix, and 15 of the Major League Baseball teams hold their spring training in Phoenix.

With an diverse population of business people, musicians, and athletes, the people of Phoenix are united in their strong commitment to helping the less fortunate.  Charitable organizations include The Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, Habitat for Humanity (building houses for the needy), the Ronald McDonald House, and many others. You can also make vehicle donations to Heritage for the Blind, which is committed to helping people who have visual impairment and other disabilities. People of all ages who have vision problems can learn about eye disorders, locate rehabilitation services, and get support to help them gain their independence. Heritage for the Blind accepts car donations on their website. These auto donations provide funding for many services.
Whether you live here, or are just visiting, Phoenix has a plenty to offer. Come enjoy the beautiful city and its lively atmosphere.
